RACE BROOK LODGE

864 South Undermountain Rd. (Rt 41)

Sheffield MA 01257

Nestled at the foot of Mount Race in Sheffield MA, the Race Brook Lodge offers easy access to the many cultural and natural attractions of the Berkshires. Meandering footpaths connect the restored lodge, barns and cottages, all converted into comfortable accommodations and spacious event spaces. Race Brook’s rich history is reflected in the architecture of the buildings, with wide plank floors, exposed wood beams, and quirky nooks and crannies adding rustic character. No two rooms are alike; all are thoughtfully appointed and WiFi accessible. Enjoy our hearty, homemade breakfast, and stay for dinner at the on-site Stagecoach Tavern. Extensive hiking trails are right outside your door, including a short jaunt to the must-see views from the top of nearby Race Brook Falls, and direct access to The Appalachian Trail. Just across the brook, the farm garden grows much of the produce for our restaurant and welcomes visitors in the summer months. We are family-run, with a commitment to responsive service.

DINING

The Stagecoach Tavern

The Stagecoach Tavern at Race Brook Lodge is one of the Berkshires finest dining experiences, and it’s only a few steps from our guest rooms serving dinner Thursday. The oldest part of the Stagecoach Tavern dates back to the mid to late 1700’s, and historical records show that it first operated as a tavern in 1829. It was in fact a stagecoach stop. We like to think of those weary travelers stopping for comfort and revival when we welcome our guests for an evening. The Stagecoach has had a colorful and dynamic history since the early days of the Giles Andrews Tavern. As an English Pub in the 1950s, ’60s and ’70s the Stagecoach was the pit stop for racecar drivers from Lime Rock Park and a favorite local watering hole. In 2004, Race Brook Lodge owner David Rothstein and his son Michael purchased the property and breathed new life into an old treasure. Our menu is seasonal and local – sourced from area farmers and inspired by the tradition of hearty tavern fare. It is a meeting of local ingredients with creative, international flavors. Inventive vegetarian and gluten free options are always available.

Race Brook Falls

Race Brook Falls is just over the Connecticut border off of Route 41 in Sheffield, Massachusetts. It's a beautiful waterfall that actually has three tiers to it although most people only see one since they can't hike up the steeper trails or don't realize the falls goes up farther. It's not a stretch to say that "Hawaiian waterfall" comes to mind when you visit Race Brook during the summer months. With lush greenery created by waterfall mist, cascading water over rocks, wading pools, and peaceful surroundings, you can easily imagine yourself in a remote Hawaiian rain forest. There couldn't be a nicer waterfall anywhere. It's not a raging torrent of water nor is it so small that it doesn't impress (although during drought like conditions it's just a trickle of water). Race Brook is a really neat spot in the middle of a quiet forest. There's something mystical about all waterfalls and Race Brook is no exception. In the wintertime, this world turns into an ice fantasy land with all types of magical shapes and designs being carved out and formed by Mother Nature.
